This piece was inspired by Salvador Dali and philosopher Alan Watts. The surreal reality that many of us live in starts from birth, from the moment we begin to crawl there has been a birth of avarice and acquisition. We are raised in an empty pool of society based on consumerism, that keeps us enslaved, starting from our parents and passed on to the young. Those who notice a flaw in the system flirt with the idea of waking up to see that there’s something fundamentally wrong with our process of living. After acquiring some knowledge we believe we have figured out what life is about only to find that you’re still in an early stage of enlightenment. The longer you continue that path, the lighter the weight of your thoughts become ultimately taking you to a healthier state of mind. Even though our reach for the light of wisdom seems near there is more to be learned while we remain in this physical actuality.
"Naranjas Viejas" tells an appealing story of the aesthetics that you find in relationships with those close to us and that with yourself. I believe that there should be time to reflect on your past so that you can further your psychological growth and understand where things take a stumble. Here, the young guy is looking back into his past relationship, portrayed as the couple on top of a unicycle, in order to understand the difficulty of maintaining proper balance in a romantic entanglement that becomes damaged by cultural differences. The boat is a representation of feeling "out of place" and drowning in confusion. Maintaining structure in our lives becomes complicated by our natural skill to think critically; sometimes it will cost us friends and family members to walk away. However, regardless of the pain we endure there are ideas and beliefs that will carry to our present lives and give fruition, regardless if your unicycle has been put away to rest.
Here I would like to evoke passion inspired by the fibonacci sequence. The game of flirting starts with attraction followed by desire and established by contact. Once the ratio of craving of one another takes the symmetry of both partners, there will be a dance between the two who dared. the aesthetic perfection of the golden ratio has been met and the transfer of DNA information begins to be passed back and forth. There’s thin rules to nature's architecture limitation and we are part of the mysticism found where there is beauty.
It is difficult to choose one painting to represent you and the work that you do. However, I chose this one because it tells the story of an artist. It's titled "Algo Interno", (oil on canvas) which means "something internal". This is a reference to the constant battle between dreams and reality. On this canvas, the painting is split in half with one half depicting the "domestic life" and society's rigorous expectations of status, getting married, owning a house, and building from there. While your other half wants to become free and explore the creative that is within you. Often you're caught in the middle, confused about what type of person you want to be. More than once, you will find that you are in limbo flirting with one side, while to the other side of you is being compromised.
This is my latest painting that was inspired by the many stages a person goes through that creates a ripple of confusion that ultimately can lead to self growth. Like much of my work this piece contains a surreal aesthetic to it, while capturing some of life's best features such as romance, rest, landscapes and of course the traumas. It was important to depict the landscape as a sea of tall grass that would hold the boats that keeps past childhood experiences part of the present. In the foreground romance takes over, it comes in many forms and out of nowhere like a hiccup. We tend to start our romantic encounters the way we see them being described to us either in movies, books or by someone else. This can create a false illusion of how love “should” be instead of creating something new then call it your own. A unicycle resembles the tool of a balance affair, however it doesn't mean it should be used the traditional way by simply sitting on it.
